Drake A. Joseph
I'm an electrical engineer and experimental physicist with experience in Aerospace and Defense. My primary skills include full life-cycle development of satellite power electronics, test engineering, high speed (500 MHz) mixed signal PCB design, embedded systems, data analysis, and Beckhoff PLCs. My day-to-day work includes capturing requirements, designing, manufacturing, integrating, and testing electronic systems.
How I work
I start from the requirement and the failure mode, not the schematic. Most of the value in a hardware design is decided before the first component is placed — in the topology choice, the loss budget, and the honest assessment of what the environment is going to do to the board. I write the analysis down, I build the model, and then I measure the hardware against both. When they disagree, that disagreement is the interesting part.
Why space
Space hardware is the clearest expression of the engineering constraint I find most interesting: you get one shot, the margin has to be real, and nobody is coming to service it. That forces a kind of honesty about analysis and test that I want to work inside of. I have designed to vibration, thermal-vacuum, and radiation-derating requirements, and I would like to keep doing that at a larger scale.
